Step Beyond

At Beyond the Path, we work across three distinct strands: scheduled courses, bespoke training, and consultancy.

Training is delivered within the landscape of the South Downs National Park, and beyond, at your chosen venue, focusing on practical wilderness skills, bushcraft, nature awareness, and real-world outdoor understanding.

Scheduled Courses

Structured courses delivered at set dates throughout the year, designed for all levels—from foundational skills through to advanced field practice.

These courses follow a clear learning structure, but are not limited to beginners. Some sessions focus on progression, refinement, and applied fieldcraft for those with prior experience.

Each course combines practical wilderness skills with wider nature education, helping you not only develop capability in the outdoors, but also build ecological understanding and situational awareness within the landscape.

You can expect:

  • Structured, progressive learning matched to course level
  • Practical bushcraft and wilderness skills in real environments
  • Nature education integrated into field observation and practice
  • Time applying skills under real outdoor conditions
  • Small group sizes to support individual development

Best suited for:

  • Beginners building strong foundational skills
  • Intermediate participants developing confidence and range
  • Experienced practitioners refining fieldcraft and judgement
  • Anyone seeking structured learning in a real outdoor context

Bespoke Training & Experiences

Tailored outdoor learning designed entirely around your goals.

This is the most flexible and in-depth part of what we offer. Sessions are built specifically for individuals, groups, or organisations who want focused development, targeted outcomes, or a more immersive outdoor experience.

We design everything around your needs, including location, pace, and focus.

Suitable for:

  • Corporate teams
  • Youth and community groups
  • Educational and charity organisations

Consultancy

Strategic support for outdoor programmes and development.

We work with individuals and organisations creating or refining outdoor education, bushcraft, or nature-based provision.

  • Site use and operational setup
  • Integrating bushcraft and nature education into delivery
  • Long-term advisory and development support

Step Beyond the Path

Whether you are joining a scheduled course, booking a bespoke experience, or developing your own provision, our focus remains the same: practical skills, real environments, and meaningful time outdoors.

TESTIMONIALS

I have worked with Nick for the last 15 years in his capacity as an extremely high-quality trainer of all things ‘beyond the path’. He co-developed and led training for the Rother Valley Schools Forest School Level 3 training, subsequent further specific training, and led forest school days for young people across the area in West Sussex, through our school networks. His tenacity and energy for detail, development of skills, transferable knowledge are unbounded and lead to engagement and motivation across a whole group of children or adults learning alongside him. Nick brings a sense of humour to all of his training, along with a very calm and gentle manner; but also with a rigour for planning, woodland management, safety outdoors and emotional understanding. Learning outdoor skills with Nick is life changing; you will leave with a deeper appreciation of the world around you and in doing so, care more about it; whether that be by silently tracking roe deer prints on the South Downs, gathering dry tinder, making sweet chestnut bark baskets, or tasting the rather interesting burdock root!! I highly recommend booking through Beyond the Path- it will be an experience full of laughter, enthusiasm and knowledge that will stay with you long after the course has finished.
Beyond the Path with Nick Ward is the real thing. Over a single weekend in West Sussex, we slept under shelters we’d built ourselves, lit fires from scratch, sourced and purified water, learnt knife skills, cooked outdoors and foraged for plants — a genuine breadth of bushcraft, delivered with the quiet authority of someone with over 25 years of experience. Nick is calm, knowledgeable and generous with his time. He pitches everything at the right level, accessible enough that you’re never lost, substantive enough that you leave feeling inspired. Preparing and cooking my own fish over a fire I’d made myself is an experience I won’t forget. If you’re curious about the wilderness, Nick is exactly the right guide. Highly recommended.
